The "NB" in the upper left corner is a Christiansted marking (Note Bene) indicating "to be registered".

Although a good supply of the 5b Christian IX stamps were delivered to St. Thomas in June 1905, there were also large numbers of the 4¢ Bicolor and the 5¢ and 8¢ Coat of Arms stamps remaining. There were overprinted, 22,000 of each, with "5 Bit 1905" by A.H. Thiele of Copenhagen. The entire stock was then purchased by the Society for the Assistance of the Lepers' and together with the DWI National Bank were used as a fund-raising scheme. Thus, privately prepared covers were unusual.

Pictured in DWI Mails, page 9-27.
