Canada, 1852, Beaver, 3d red (Unitrade 4), lovely horizontal pair, clear to mostly wide margins with particularly fresh color, lifted and hinged for identification, tied by concentric rings cancel on yellow legal-size cover to Toronto, matching "Thorold U.C., JA 15 1859" c.d.s. and "Registered" straightline handstamp, Toronto (1.17) backstamp; couple vertical file folds, an Extremely Fine and eye-catching use, one of only a few recorded double-rate domestic registry covers franked with stamps. The registry system was set up in Canada to encourage its use in sending money or valuables as the fee was only 1d, which was to be prepaid in cash only. It was not until the fee was raised to 2d in July 1859 that the fee could be officially paid with stamps.
