Canada, 1853, Beaver, 3d brown red (Unitrade 4a), large margins to clear at left, just tied by concentric rings cancel on small cover to Montreal, "St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad, FE 12 1855" (Boggs type 9a) rimless c.d.s., Montreal (2.12) backstamp; two tiny spindle holes, Very Fine and rare railroad use. Scott 4a.

This cover was posted aboard or at a stop point of the St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad, the Canadian leg of the rail between Montreal and Portland, Me. The two legs met at Island Point, Vt. The railway began carrying mail on October 22, 1853.
