Canada, 1851, Beaver, 3d red, laid paper (Unitrade 1), full to large margins, used with U.S. 1¢ type IV (9) two singles, left with large to huge margins (sheet margin at bottom) except clear at top, other margins to cutting and 3¢ type II (11A), margins to cut in, tied together by circa 1854 "New-York Feb 18" c.d.s. on a small piece; left 1¢ with small scissors cut, 3d with tear, otherwise Fine. a unique usage showing an unauthorized but tolerated mixed franking prepaying the 10¢ rate, and the only relatively affordable example of a 3d laid paper used with U.S. postage. After July 1, 1851, the combination use of a 3p Beaver and U.S. stamps was against regulations but occasionally tolerated. This is believed to be the only example of a Beaver stamp used with the 1¢ 1851.
