Canada, 1859, Queen Victoria, 12½¢ yellow green (Unitrade 18), two slightly overlapping singles with strong color, tied by light numeral "50" four-ring cancels on cover to England, matching "Windsor C.W, AU 25 1859" c.d.s. and "Registered" straightline, red Liverpool (9.6) transit and red British Crown "Registered" handstamp, red London (9.7) transit and Wadebridge (9.8) arrival c.d.s., some light cover soiling along left edge and small portion of flap missing, a Very Fine and interesting use. There are two plausible explanations for the franking on this cover: 1. single 12½¢ Allan rate to England plus adiditonal 12½¢ rate for registry effective April 1, 1859, or 2.) double 12½¢ Allan rate to England with registry fee prepaid in cash.

Carried on the Allan Line's
North American leaving Quebec City on August 27 and arriving at Liverpool on September 6.
