ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS FRANKING.

Provenance: Hinde, Jephcott, Harrison

At first glance this might appear to be a triple weight cover of 1½ oz. at 12½¢ per half ounce with the registration fee paid with the fourth stamp. In fact, there was no triple-rate available to the U.K. until January 12, 1866. Letters over one ounce were charged the two ounce quadruple rate.

This was carried on the Allan Line's
Jura leaving Portland on December 4 and arriving Liverpool on December 16.
