Shaded Star (Weiss ST-5P3), fine strike ties 1¢ ultramarine (156) and 6¢ dull rose (159), s.e. at left, on clean 1874 cover to Paris, France, black "New York Transit Nov 4" c.d.s. and matching "Insufficiently Prepaid" handstamp, blue Calais entry c.d.s. and red ms. "41" due rating, Extremely Fine and an unusual short paid use with the 1¢ 6¢ franking.

This cover was short paid 2¢ for the 9¢ French treaty rate of the 1874 convention. The postage due was calculated as 50 centimes (9¢) rate plus 25c. fine, minus credit for postage paid of 34c. (7¢) equals the 41c. debit rating (7¢ = 6.64 decimes). This cover was carried on the Cunard Line "Algeria" that arrived at Queenstown on Nov. 14, 1874.
