Estimate $2,000 - 3,000

THE EARLIEST RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE NEW YORK TYPE E SUPPLEMENTARY MAIL DATESTAMP. ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED STRIKES OF TR-W5 IN RED ON COVER.

Provenance: Skinner

Carried on Hapag Line "Westphalia" that arrived at Queenstown on August 28, 1874. The TR-W5 cancel is recorded used from March 30 to September 12, 1874. This cover has an unusually clear strike of the New York supplementary mail type E c.d.s., probably because it is the earliest recorded example and doesn't show the later wear. The other on-cover red strike is dated Jully 18, 1874, but bears a type D supplementary mail postmark.
