This photo was originally taken by Matthew Brady in his studio, on February 9, 1864. It soon became one of the most popular of the Lincoln portraits and was reproduced in large quantities and in many variations, both with and without Brady's permission. It is the only close-up of Lincoln wearing reading glasses.
