I cannot." quote and Whittemore & Co. of Boston imprint, on cover bearing 1¢ blue, type V (24), three singles, two with nat. s.e., cancelled by matching circular grids, red "Charlestown Ms Aug 19 1861" d.c.d.s., addressed to Littleton, N.H.; cover repaired at right, a Fine appearing example of this rare and desirable Lincoln design.

A REMARKABLE DESIGN WITH THE FORMERLY BEARDLESS PORTRAIT EMBELLISHED WITH LINCOLN'S NEW BEARD AND CROSSED FLAGS ADDED FOR PATRIOTIC SENTIMENT.

The original portrait of a beardless Lincoln is based on a photograph by C. S. German and was used by Whittemore & Co. during the 1860 campaign. After Lincoln's election, the engraving was modified by adding a beard.
