1923, 1¢ green, rotary coil waste (594), bright, fresh and virtually perfectly centered with choice color and a neat machine cancel; an, Extremely Fine Gem. SMQ $53,600. Scott $10,500+
THE 1¢ ROTARY COIL WASTE ISSUE, IS NEARLY NON-EXISTENT IN SOUND, WELL CENTERED CONDITION. THE ONE WE OFFER HERE IS UNQUESTIONABLY AMONG THE FOUR OR FIVE FINEST EXAMPLES RECORDED. IT IS ONE OF ONLY TWO PSE-GRADED EXAMPLES TO RECEIVE A VF-XF 85, WITH NONE GRADED HIGHER.
Expertization: backstamped "HH" (Herman Herst) with 1982, 1992 & 2000 PF and 2009 PSE Certificates, the last graded VF-XF 85.
Provenance: Joyce, Minervino
Because the rotary press 1¢ perf. 11 was not identified as a separate variety until two years after it was issued, most were lost to philately; only about 100 examples have been recorded to date. The vast majority of those are poorly centered and/or faulty. Scott's value is for examples "with perforations just touching frameline on one side".
