1861, 5¢ orange brown, type II (30), absolutely perfectly centered with perforations clear of design at top and bottom; rich color and clear red grid cancel; a positively Superb Gem.
Scott $1,400

THE 5¢ TYPE II IS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO LOCATE WITHOUT THE PERFORATIONS IMPINGING ON THE DESIGN AT EITHER THE TOP OR BOTTOM. WHEN THAT RARE ATTRIBUTE IS COMBINED WITH THE EXTRAORDINARY CENTERING, CHOICE COLOR AND BEAUTIFUL CANCEL OF THIS EXAMPLE, THE RESULT IS A ONE-OF-A-KIND GEM.

Expertization: 2001 PF Certificate.

Provenance: Hall

Due to the onset of the Civil War, the type II 5¢ orange brown had a period of use of less than two months. Finding a gem used single is exceedingly difficult—in fact, this may well be the finest example extant.
