Lot 581

1851, 12¢ black, diagonal bisect (17a), tied across cut by San Francisco c.d.s. on double-rate 1853 folded letter to Boston, red crayon "Due 10"; minor edge wear, Fine-Very Fine.
Scott $2,500

Expertization: signed by Raymond Weill.

An unusual combination of a bisect accepted by the San Francisco office, but with additional postage due. The irony is that the full stamp would have paid the postage, but the additional 6¢ required for reasons of weight was now a 10c unpaid charge.
