1861, 30¢ orange (71), three singles used with a 24¢ lilac (78) tied by segmented cork cancels on 1864 folded letter to Shanghai, China, black "New York Am. Pkt., Jan 8" exchange office c.d.s. on reverse, manuscript "96" credit and large fancy "2" (indicating double), red London PAID transit c.d.s. (Jan 25) with "1d" local charge, backstamped Hong Kong (Mar 12); a Very Fine cover from the Heard correspondence. The $1.14 franking is an 8¢ overpayment of the 53¢ British Mail rate via Marseilles. It may have been a misinterpretation of the obsolete rate of Dec. 1861 - 51¢/57¢ (¼oz./½oz.). Estimate 2,000 - 3,000
