1859, 10¢ green, type V (35), strip of three and pair tied by bold red grids on 1859 folded letter from San Francisco to Cognac, France, blue "PAID" in oval on front with matching "Wells, Fargo & Cos. Express, S. Frco." double circle datestamp (illegible date) on reverse, red "New Paid York/ 9/ Nov 12" exchange office c.d.s., ultramarine Havre entry datestamp (Nov 26) and red boxed "PD", backstamped "Havre a Paris", "Paris a Bordeaux" and "Cognac"; few bottom perfs on strip slightly clipped, still fresh and Extremely Fine. Apparently franked for French Mail rate for letters weighing over a half ounce but under one ounce, and including a 5¢ British treaty surcharge for West Coast mail.
