Lot 73

1851, 3¢ orange brown, type I (10), position 70L1E with interpane margin at right and large margins left & bottom just in at top, rich, early color; cancelled by red grid on cover to Redding Ct. matching red Jul 1 Amenia, N.Y. cds, which makes this, in all probability, a First Day cover; clean and Very Fine. (Catalogue value as a first day cover $12,500). Sold on its own merits.

Expertization: with 2002 A.P.S. certificate specifying the date of use as 7/1/(1851).

There is no indication of year date anywhere on the cover, but the fact that the stamp is from the early state of plate 1 apparently was sufficient evidence for the A.P.S. to render its ruling. The cover is accompanied by a letter from the late Wilson Hulme stating that he is quite convinced it is a first day cover, and he was sorry he had not been aware of this piece, or he would have included it in his then about to be published article on the first day covers of the 3¢ 1851 issue.
