Lot 8

1851-1857 3¢ Accumulation, multi-decade accumulation of imperforate and perforated 3¢ issues, collected by shades and/or plates. The collector worked with Dr. Amonette for many years on his shades, and included some correspondence from Dr. Amonette. The accumulation consists of the following imperforate issues: a shade guide (which according to the owner was built by Amonette and includes some of his notes on this guide) consisting of over 130 stamps, including two plums (we are unsure about these), a large accumulation of over 850 stamps collected by shade, "with much help from Dr. Amonette," including (owner's counts) 28 orange browns, 28 experimental orange browns, 181 brown carmine (1852), 78 clarets (1852), 172 clarets (1856) plus yellow browns, dull browns, reds, etc., etc.; a shade guide of the 60+ stamps, including plating, by Chase, that had originally offered in a 1985 public auction, includes a pinkish and a plum (again, we are unsure about these), collection of over 300 stamps, plated perforated include a fairly complete plating of plate #15 (over 160) with a note, "most plated by Dick Celler"; a stockbook with over 300 stamps (all #26) collected by shade ("Bill Amonette was instrumental."). A fabulous holding which will be a great beginning for a budding specialist or quite useful for the advanced collector.
