In order to meet the demand for a 3pf stamp to pay the printed matter rate from
Vineta's post office to Germany, the ship's commander authorized his purser to surcharge and bisect 300 5pf stamps. The sudden increased demand was caused by the crew's desire to send home American newspapers reporting celebrations of the Kaiser's birthday.

Because the 1¢ rotary press perf. 11 was not identified as a separate variety until two years after it was issued, most were lost to philately; only about 100 examples have been recorded to date. The vast majority of those are poorly centered and/or faulty. Scott's value is for examples "with perforations just touching frameline on one side".
