1893, Columbians, large die proofs (230P1-245P1), complete set on India die sunk on 152 mm x 227mm cards, bound into a leather bound album, presented to Francois Aussaresses by D.E. Woodhull, president of the American Bank Note Company, with "Christophe Colomb, 1492-1892 stamped in gold leaf on the spine, the proof edges are also in gold leaf. Begins with a title page and then a page preceding each proof with the name of the value. The proofs are remarkably fresh (1¢ has a slight spot) and are in an unusual vertical format. It is believed to be one of only five produced, and the only one in French. Original dust case accompanies. A stunning set and a remarkable philatelic artifact. Catalogue value of the proofs, $12,300. Estimate 7,500 - 10,000

Great Britain, 1840, Queen Victoria First Issue, 1d black, First Day Cover (1), plate 2, "O.D.", three full margins, barely touched lower right, tied by red handstamped cancel on folded letter from Bristol to London, letter datelined "Bristol May 6 1840" and a beautifully struck "Bristol MY 6 1840" on reverse with circular "E 7 MY 1840" as well, filing fold passes through stamp and a tiny non-contemporary ink mark at top right, both barely noticeable, handsome usage.
