1856, 5¢ dark red brown (12), position 70R, huge margins to just clear at top, showing bit adjacent stamp at bottom and trace of imprint at right, cancelled by a beautifully struck partial dark blue "(Alb)any (G)a. According to the Frajola & Mayer book on the 5¢ 1856 Issue, the 5¢ is recorded as used from only 53 towns across the country based on covers and off-cover cancellations. The other possibility, Albany, Pa., is listed in the American Stampless Cover Catalog as using a manuscript postmark during this time frame, while Albany, Ga. is recorded as using a circular datestamp in blue as late as 1853.
